Sherbrooke North Dakota Dentist

Clarence Norman Brunsdale was born and raised in Portland, North Dakota, on March 1, 1916. After graduating from the University of North Fargo in 1935 with a degree in business administration, Davis was accepted as a dentist in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1937, he returned to Portland to work for the U.S. Department of Health and to teach business courses at Brumbies Academy.

Bunsdale retired from public life in the early 1960s, but remained active in agriculture for the rest of his life, first as a farmer and later as an educator and farmer.

Elected a Republican senator from Traill County in 1926 and 1930, Brunsdale lost in 1934. After assuming the presidency of Portland Bank in 1940, he was elected to the state Senate in 1941 and served as the organizing committee and chairman of the Republican House of Representatives. After the death of Senator William Langer in 1943, he was briefly a United Nations Senator in 1944, with the support of the North Dakota Republican Party and the Democratic Party in the United States House of Representatives. He defeated Davis in a three-way contest by a margin of just over 1,000 votes, but lost again in 1946.

Davis was elected a Republican state senator in 1952 and governor of North Dakota in 1956 and 1958. Brunsdale appeared in the governor's office on the first day of his second term in 1958, the day after the death of Senator William Langer.

Davis served as a battalion commander in the U.S. Army during World War II and was elected an active legionary in 1947, receiving four awards for service to wounded and meritorious service. After retiring from active military service as a lieutenant colonel, he returned home, managed his ranching and banking interests, was a director of Provident Life Insurance Company, and was elected mayor of McClusky in 1953 and 1954. He became active in political life until the late 1970s, when he returned to his home country to lead and support the boards of Providents Life Insurance Company.

After graduating from Brumbies Academy in Portland, Brunsdale attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in political science and a master's degree in public policy.

The records in this series were acquired by the State Archives of North Dakota at a time after the governor's office was handed over. The documents are available to the public and there is a great deal of information. John E. Davis was born on March 1, 1884 in Bismarck, the son of John and Mary Davis, and graduated from Bistrock High School in 1931 and Luther College in 1935.
